Medical acupuncture is a therapeutic technique derived from traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) principles that involves the insertion of fine needles into specific points on the body to achieve therapeutic effects. Several evidence- based theories help to explain how medical acupuncture works based on modern scientific knowledge:
Acupuncture is thought to stimulate the nervous system, triggering the release of various neurotransmitters such as endorphins (natural painkillers) and serotonin (a mood regulator). This can help in reducing pain perception and promoting relaxation.
Acupuncture is proposed to stimulate the release of endogenous opioids, such as enkephalins and endorphins, which act as the body’s natural pain-relieving substances. These substances can help in reducing pain and promoting a sense of well-being.
Acupuncture needles inserted at specific points stimulate local blood circulation and trigger a healing response in the tissues. This improved blood flow can aid in tissue repair and reduce inflammation as well as reduce muscle tone for normalised muscular function.
Acupuncture can influence the autonomic nervous system, which regulates involuntary body functions such as heart rate, digestion, and stress responses. It is believed that acupuncture can help balance sympathetic and parasympathetic activity, promoting relaxation and reducing stress.
It’s important to note that while there is scientific evidence supporting some of these mechanisms, further research is ongoing to better understand how acupuncture works from a scientific perspective. Acupuncture is coupled along with other physiotherapy treatments, including manual therapy and exercise to aid faster recovery and return the body back to a state of homeostasis.

Acupuncture FAQs
The number of treatments required will largely depend on how your condition responds to treatment which will be repeatedly assessed by your clinician . Usually a course requires 4-6 treatments although positive results are often experienced after 2-3 treatments. Treatments are recommended once or twice weekly, especially in the acute phase which may then be reduced to weekly or fortnightly as treatment progresses. Chronic conditions will frequently require more treatments for longer than acute presentations; however your clinician will tailor each treatment to your current symptoms on each visit as your condition begins to respond to treatment. Maintenance treatments can be used to reduce the risk of an injury reoccurring.
Although acupuncture treatments are often cumulative with people responding at varying rates due to various, individual physiological influences, a number of people will experience beneficial effects after their initial treatment. It is also not unusual to experience an increase in symptoms in the first 24 hours post treatment before experiencing a marked improvement. A very small number of the population may not respond to acupuncture treatment, however this is extremely rare.
